ON TOP ASL
ON TOP ASL
J.R TracyKempf at Melikhovo - One of Ola Nygards' On Top scenarios. These are popcorn size, such as this Kursk offering with 6.5 squads per side. The Russians get an ATG and a KV as well, while the Germans are supported by a flammpanzer and a PzIVH. A straightforward quickie at 4.5 turns. Lend-Lease Attack - Another of Ola's - 3.5 Germans squads and a pair of Tigers hold off two groups of Russians, each with a couple squads, a truck, an SU-85 and a pair of gyrostabilized Shermans. 5.6 turns. Brian YouseWe used Lend Lease Attack and Kempf at whatever the name was. 8) People seemed to enjoy both, and they got a lot of play because they could be played so quickly. Well done! Alan Bills vs ?--- I only played one scenario from it, Kempf at Melikhovo. Very fast, probably pro-german, but it clearly sways based on entry turn of theKV. It can come on turns 1-4, auto on 4 if it doesn't come in prior.IWthout the KV, the Russians have a hard time. PzII Fl tank kind ofburns up everything in sight. Russians do ge a 45LL and one atr tocounter it, but they aren't much help. German also gets one PzIVH (whyH I don't know). Bob Riconda--- I played four scenarios from the Journal this weekend: "Kempf","Florence", "Bloody Attack", and "Lend-Lease". I thought all of themwere very good; I wouldn't mind replaying them. They provided me a nicevariety for the weekend - an East Front town assault with FT tank, aItalian battle with seldom used Staghounds & a German-Italian SP Gun, aSicilian bridge attack, and an East Front tank battle. Don Stone vs Chuck Payne--- J94 - Kempf At Melikhovo with Chuck Payne. Met Chuck at WinterOffensive despite the fact he lives 10 miles away from me. Heintroduced me to a number of other players in North Carolina -- lesson#4 is there are lots of ASL players near me. We chose a scenario fromJournal 6 which had started to sell a few hours earlier. I played theRussian, felt pretty good about much of my play, but succumbed to arather nasty flamethrower tank that took out 4 of my 6 squads. WithChuck's help through a number of new rules, I was really starting tofeel like I was getting the hang of the mechanics. A fun scenario. Mika Harviala vs Ray WoloszynMy last game on Friday was Kempf at Melikhovo (J94) vs. Ray WoloszynThis scenario sees the Russians (me) defending against a decent force of Germans, forcefully propped up by a FlammPzIII. The Russians get to roll for a wandering monster that takes the form of a KV-1. Now, needless to say, it's the Flamm that makes or breaks the game, specifically how many shots it takes before it goes back to the Exxon station to refill. In my case, I believe it was four, resulting in two squads worth of BBQ. My AT gun took a shot or two at the Flamm before breaking down and then X'ing out. My KV attempted to duel Ray's PzIV, which resulted in a dead KV for me. I retreated to the last corner with my leader and remaining hs, which he swarmed and bayonetted on the last turn. A good game, but I'd say the KV needs to come on no later than Turn 3 to make it a bit more challenging for the Germans. 1-3 (Main 0-2) Mika Harviala vs Steve AndersonI played the last game of the tourney against Steve Anderson. We picked Lend Lease Attack (J98) from the new Journal. This is a tourney sized scenario that has two groups of Russians each with a couple of squads, leader, an American Studebaker, a brace of Shermans and an SU-85 to lend some real muscle to the picture. Facing them are several German squads, backed by Tigers. The Russians have to score 28 VP, by exiting and killing Germans (prisoners are no VP). I pull my first boneheader when I roll a fully laden truck into the LOS of the Tiger. It doesn't burn, but nobody comes out of it either. I didn't need those 7VP anyway.... I whip a CE sherman by some Germans to get into a fire position, who fire at the crew to lay down some residual. The next Sherman commander unfortunately takes one of those residual bullets in the cranium as I boxcar the 2+2 induced NMC. But that's OK, I didn't need those 6VP anyway... I'm leery of my die rolling at this point, so I decide to unload the second truck before rolling through the residual. Sure enough, when the truck tries to move again, a residual bullet hits the windshield which startles the driver who promptly plows the Studebaker into the STUNned Sherman parked in the middle of the road. Hah! Finally something smart done by me! On Steve's turn, we begin a game of cat and mouse with the SU-85s and the Tigers. He finally pulls one out, and I acquire and kill it in my secod Prep. Unfortunately the crew crawls out of it, denying me of my rightful 2VP. The SU-85 also sadly lacks a MG. His second Tiger goes into goal keeper mode, and I gun the Shermans to get as far away from this monster as I can get. My next turn has a Sherman acquired by the tiger, and a second one drives by puffing out cute little clouds of smoke to obscure the mean tiger's LOS. He takes the bait and I only lose one of my Shermans as they dash off the board. Whew. In exchange, he manages to slay an SU-85 with a PF. That leaves me with an SU-85 and two squads to exit, and 11VP shy. Killing the tiger and exiting the inf will do the job, as will exiting the SU-85 and infantry. On the second to last turn I sneak the SU-85 around a corner, and face off the Tiger. He swings the turret, fires, and malfs the MA. The MA repair fails, and the tiger gets toasted when it tries to move away. The crew again escape, giving me no margin of error, as I'm 6 VP shy. If the SU-85 escapes, I win, if not, well, let's not ponder that. As it happens, Steve's infantry sends a veritable shower of PF's at that fleeing SU, but all miss as it squeaks by at range 3. Game over, and I pull out that last win to end up 3-5 (Main 2-3). Raymond WoloszynThe scenarios in the new journal saw a lot of play partly because they were integrated into the mini-tournament. Be careful with the new scenario, "Lend Lease Attack." Many of us botched the set-up as well as the victory conditions failing to note that German casualties lessen the amount of VP's the Russian needs to get off the board. You are supposed to use British vehicle counters but I opted for US ones for the Dodge trucks. I figured if I had to run a gauntlet of Tiger tanks I better have a HEMI-powered truck! I was right but unfortunately for me, the trucks sans Infantry were about the only vehicles I exited. Left on the board was another American foreign aid catastrophe that we come to know so well.
