Counter Errata: The German lePaK 41 - AT Gun 40LL should not be Underscored.

C4.3 .....The German 28LL and 40LL Guns use the APCR Basic TH# Modification even if firing HE..... Errata: delete the Underscored line under "40" and also on Page H24, German Ordnance Listing.

Germ Multi-Applicable Ordnance Notes (for the lePaK 41)

A. Due to the design of its armor piercing projectile, this gun uses the APCR To Kill Table and Range modifiers for its To Kill DR vs AFV, unless using HE. In addition, it always uses the Basic TH# Modification (C4.3) for its To Hit DR--even if it fires HE--and is not subject to APCR Depletion Numbers.

7. Muntion:

HK = 4.2 cm Pzgr. Patr. 41

Sp = eingefuhrte Sprgr. Patr

6. The armor-piercing ammunition of the 4.2 cm Pak 41 is the hard core grenade (HK). Use up to 800 m distance.

Explosive grenade (Sp) can achieve obstructive effect when shelling weapon shields.

Visual slits and optics, devastating effect on favorable hits on the engine venting at the rear (incendiary shooting).

7. Ammo:

HK = 4.2 cm Pzgr.Patr.41

Sp = imported Sprgr.Patr

Hmmm ...

C2.21 An underscored caliber size means it cannot fire HE ammunition.

Inget definitivt svar.

Här följer ett långt uttdrag från https://weaponsandwarfare.com/2019/08/08/german-wwii-special-artillery-the-taper-bore-guns/

But if the shortage of tungsten ruled out the taper-bore as an anti-tank weapon, it certainly did not rule it out in other applications, and now the anti-aircraft specialists began to look at the system. In the anti-aircraft business the principal problem was the interval between firing the gun and having the shell arrive in the vicinity of the target; a great deal could happen during that time, and any way of shortening the shell’s time of flight by increasing its velocity was carefully scrutinised. Therefore the taper bore, with its substantial increase in velocity, was a highly attractive idea; the difficulty lay in the design of the projectile. In an anti-tank gun the `payload’ was a lump of inert metal, but in an anti-aircraft gun the payload had to be high explosive. And the dangers which lay in squeezing a high explosive shell were self-evident. With armour-piercing shot the core acted, as it were, as an anvil, while the tapering barrel acted as a hammer, but with an explosive filling the squeezing action had to be carefully controlled so as not to place excessive pressure on the shell body. Two solutions appeared to work satisfactorily. In the first type, the shell was of smaller diameter than the bore and was fitted with two supporting bands of sintered iron, one at the shoulder and one at the base. These were attached in the manner of driving bands, and performed the same function in spinning the shell, but they were malleable so that as the bore reduced they were swaged down and folded back, so that at the muzzle the shell left with two smoothed-down bands which set up minimal air drag. The second method was rather more complex. Three soft studs were fitted at the shoulder of the shell and the base was deeply indented with a semi-circular groove around the body. Into this grove went a malleable skirt with a circular base which fitted into the groove and acted as a sort of flexible ball-joint, turning backwards as the skirt was squeezed down by the reducing bore. At the same time the soft studs at the shoulder were pressed down and deformed until they were mere bumps on the outside of the shell. Again, the result was that as the shell left the muzzle the studs and skirt had been reduced to streamlined excrescenses which set up minimal drag. It was claimed that either of these designs could give a reduction in the time of flight by about 30 per cent, though there appear to be no trials results to back this up. Like so many other developments, the taper-bore anti-aircraft gun was overtaken by events and the war ended before the design could be perfected.

Förmodligen p.g.a usel effekt Av HE ammunitionen.

Counter Errata: The German lePaK 41 - AT Gun 40LL should not be Underscored.

Även historiskt producerades tusentals HE granater till båda PaK kanonerna.

The lePaK 41 was issued in late 1941 to infantry and parachute troops, seeing action in Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, and Russia.
Of all 313 pieces, 25 of them were sent to Waffen-SS, 115 were sent to Luftwaffe (to Fallschirm-Waffe), the remaining 173 sent to Heers and used in eastern front and North Africa.

Brief mention has already been made in Tactical and Technical Trends (No. 7, p. 3) of the German 4.2-cm Pak 41 (42-mm antitank gun). This is a tapered-bore weapon, being 42 mm at the breech and 28 mm at the muzzle. High explosive and armor-piercing ammunition is provided. Both the HE and AP ammunition (see accompanying sketch) are characterized by a relatively large propellant charge and a flaring skirt or fin at the base of the projectile. The brass-coated steel shell case is 400 mm (15.75 inches) in length. The skirt of the projectile, which is squeezed down as the projectile travels through the tapered bore, serves to give a large effective base area at the commencement of shot travel. A high muzzle velocity is thus possible with a relatively light weapon. However, owing to the relatively light weight of the projectile, the velocity tends to fall off rapidly, and maximum armor-piercing performance is achieved at short ranges only. The thickness of armor penetration is considerable in relation to the weight of the gun; the hole made, is, of course, small. Barrel wear is high; just what the life of the barrel may be is not known. However, in the case of a similar German weapon, the 2.8-cm Pak 41 (antitank gun tapering from 28 mm at the chamber to 20 mm at the muzzle) the life of the barrel is thought to be not over 400 rounds. The muzzle velocity of the 42-mm is not known; that of the 28-mm is thought to be 4,700 feet per second.

As indicated in the sketch the HE and AP projectiles are similar in shape. They are sometimes referred to as arrowhead ammunition. The perforations or holes (see sketch) are designed to decrease the mass of the skirt or fin as it is squeezed down into the recess in the projectile casing while traveling through the bore. The explosive filling of the HE projectile is blue in color, which suggests Hexagen (trimethylene trinitramine). The nose percussion fuze of the HE shell is aluminum, with the body in two sections. This fuze is of the bore-safe type; before firing, the single coil spring keeps the two half-collars squeezed against the firing pin which is thereby prevented from being depressed; in flight the centrifugal force created by the rotation of the projectile forces the two half-collars apart, and the firing pin is then free to move toward the cap on impact.

The stenciled lettering on the shell case (see sketch) has the following significance:

          First line ............. light antitank gun 41
          Second line ............ weight of propellant in grams
          Remaining lines ........ data on propelling charge

The HE shell case contains 310 grams of propellant and is so stenciled.

Wunderwaffe PaK41 75LL, den uppskalade grövre kaliber version av dess två föregångare AT 28 LL & AT 40LL.
