AFTERMATH (6 Turns): The Germans prepared for their assault into the Barrikady Factory district. The attack would be spearheaded by two Sturm companies and one rifle company in support— a shock force of roughly 350 battle-hardened soldiers from the 6th Army. They were supported by a platoon of three Panzer IIIL, six SPW 251/1 half-tracks, and two SPW 251/10 command vehicles mounting 3.7 cm PaK guns. Overhead, Stuka dive-bombers circled, and artillery fire had been planned to soften the Soviet defenses.

Opposing them, the Soviets had dug in with approximately 350 men in the forward line and another 120 in the second defense line— a total defensive strength of nearly 500 troops. Their defense had support by two AT 45mm and three dug-in, hidden T-70 tankettes. Soviet Lt 70+mm artillery aimed to fire in front of Chemist Shop at German entry points closest to the Volga. Another OBA 80+mm targeted the area around the railway embankments.

At first light, the German soldiers advanced into the barrikady district. Eight Panzer half-tracks raced forward, packed with Stoßtruppen — heading straight for the Russian frontline in the center. The assault quickly gained momentum. German panzers and half-tracks cut off Soviet retreat paths, forcing the defenders out into the open where Stukas screamed down and targeted them.

Soviet artillery in the Volga sector called down artillery blast at the German infantry that canceled their push in that sector and withdrew off-board. In the western sector, however, the assault pressed on relentlessly. German troops stormed forward. The Soviets either retreated in disorder or stood and fought to the death, often cut off by German armor.

A Russian anti-tank gun revealed itself and fired twenty rounds at an immobilized SPW hull-down by the embankment after a Russ squad had attacked it in CC, the failure led the squad to be eliminated by the SPW. Finally a hit in the upper part of the SPW made it explode in a fireball, shortly thereafter the AT gun was captured and its crew eliminated. A dug-in T-70 was discovered by German infantry and quickly eliminated by a Panzer IIIL. Another Pz IIIL was shocked by an ATR hit and never recovered and thereby wrecked. At the same time entry into the first hall was acheived.

Then, suddenly, the German storm tactics ground to a halt.

Ammunition shortages, worsened by the brutal attrition of house-to-house fighting. As the assault waves paused to resupply, a radio message crackled from the rear: the battalion cook reported that supper was ready. Exhausted soldiers exchanged grim, ironic glances. In the midst of hell.

AFTERMATH 18 Oct (6 Turns): The German assault continued into its second day in the Red Barrikady district. In the sector along the Volga, several small buildings were captured, and a solid foothold was established for future operations.

At the railway embankments, the large building west of the tracks was attacked in force. The Soviet defenders offered only sporadic resistance before quickly withdrawing south to the nearest building, where they halted any further German advance.

The main clash of the day took place in the Barrikady factory halls. Once again, the Soviets chose to retreat deeper into the complex rather than mount a determined defense, steadily trading ground for time. Losses on both sides were almost equal, yet the German command was pleased with the terrain gained during the day’s fighting.

AFTERMATH 19 Oct (6 Turns): The third assault by the Wehrmacht thrusts deeper into the factory halls. Where the main effort is concentrated in dense formations, the Soviet defenders pay a horrific price, yet they cannot prevent the Germans from sweeping both vast halls clear. Local counterattacks are simply cut down.

In the Volga sector the assault advances rapidly, Russian lines crumbling under the onslaught. But the German spearhead is halted just outside the heavily fortified Chemist’s Shop. A GrW 34 mortar is pounding the upper floors of a Russian machine-gun nest when the building suddenly erupts in flames. By the next morning, it is fully ablaze.

During this 3-day period, the Russians have gained 5 leader creations. Meanwhile, the German sniper has remained completely unharmed, still sitting at SAN 3. It has successfully activated and reduced the Russian SAN # four times, but has yet to target a Russian Leader. In contrast, the Russian snipers have already eliminated three German leaders.

AFTERMATH 20 Oct (7 Turns): On the fourth day, the German assault resumed in the Barrikady under misty conditions. The Chemist Shop was fully ablaze, its thick smoke spreading slowly across the battlefield in a mild breeze. Along the Volga sector, the attack made good progress. Half a dozen SPW half-tracks raced forward and dismounted several squads directly into the frontline. The Soviet defense crumbled under the onslaught, with the surviving defenders falling back toward their reserve line anchored at the Commissar’s House—where the German advance finally ground to a halt, and taking care of its dead and wounded.

In the central factory sector, a Soviet Btln MTR OBA of 80mm+ mortars, firing at a pre-registered hex at the high two-hex building, hammered the German forces all day (pulling all six black chits), and inflicting losses. German troops attack into the factory nearby the bombardment cleared one factory, but stubborn militia defenders continued to cling to small footholds in it..

In the area of the railway embankments, the German plan to force a crossing of the long street was abandoned as the fighting devolved into a stalemate.

AFTERMATH 21 Oct (6 Turns): On the fifth day of the campaign in the Barrikady district, the Germans broke through the Soviet defensive line on both sides of the railway embankment. Two fresh German companies, supported by Stuka dive-bombers, entered the area.

In the factory complex, the fighting remained bitter and attritional. Despite the renewed push, German gains were meager, as Soviet artillery repeatedly blunted every attempt to concentrate force.

Along the Volga sector, the Germans had been ordered to simply hold the line, supported by two StuG IIIG and a flight of Stukas. However, early in the fighting, two of the three Stukas were recalled, and both StuG IIIG were also withdrawn due to disabled main guns, coordinated Recall - in platoon movement.

Seizing the opportunity, the Soviets immediately counterattacked. They recaptured several buildings near the Commissar’s House, though a small German force succeeded to advance and establish a defensive perimeter along the Volga bank. Next day 22nd October became an idle day as the troops needed a rest. Reinforcements are brought in that day and a rumour spread that the southern flank has opened up, and that the Germans have reached the outskirt of the Red October district just south of the Barrikady.

AFTERMATH 23 Oct (7 Turns): After a day of rest and the allocation of fresh reinforcements along the front line, the following day sees the front expand southward, west of the railway embankments. A massive assault into the Red October district begins, while the attack on the Red Barricades enters its seventh day.

In the Bread Factory area, two Nebelwerfer rocket batteries open fire, destroying several enemy units and forcing many survivors to rout from the blast zones or take shelter in the cellars and basements. A German rifle company then advances across the railway embankments, but as the rocket barrage lifts the assault stalls under stiff resistance and numerous booby traps. Nevertheless, a new front line is established.

In the central factory complex the Germans clear several buildings and seize the factory hall amid the vast debris field, where Soviet resistance is relatively weak and control is quickly lost. The long factory hall becomes the new focal point as the Germans throw themselves at it. Desperate Soviet counter-measures, mounted largely by militia fighters, are brushed aside by German pioneers and Stoßtruppen.

On the Volga sector the Germans content themselves with holding the line. Sensing this, the Soviets probe the defenses and launch a counter-attack that recaptures several small buildings lost two days earlier.

AFTERMATH 24 Oct (6 Turns):

On the 8th day of the struggle in the Barrikady, a dual attack unfolds as the Soviets attempt to stall and disrupt the German advance. In the Volga sector the fighting remains low-intensity: casualties are light and the perimeter stays quite stable, largely thanks to German Stukas that arrive early and prevent any serious Soviet assault—despite the Soviets being stronger in the area.

In the factory complex the battle is brutal and bloody. The Germans grind their way forward across the factory floors, expanding their perimeter only slightly through the halls.

In the Bread Factory sector a strong German force, supported by Panzers and Stukas, collides with a massed Russian concentration. The clash is extremely bloody, with almost equal losses inflicted on both sides. It is another grinding fight, yet the Germans succeed in gaining some ground and a couple of buildings. The Soviets seems determined to hold their perimeter as retreat is no longer an option. Another 3 days of fighting remains.
