AAR: SV12 "Trap By Mishap"

Hi!

Played this scenario against Conny Gesar last night. It's the second from swedish volunteers module I play after it's release.

First we were thinking of playing Ten Ton Tank (SV1) but we discovered both were missing SK board U, so we swapped to this

scenario created by Erik Leander instead. As it turned out, a very good choise and fun playing.

 

I took the attacking russians against a finnish/swedish defender armed with only squads, 2 panzerfausts and a handful of PF's

(hopefully or not depending on what side you play ;-)

Defender put up troops on edges midboard between 19 and 38, Attacker enter on south side T1 and then defender get's reinforcements

from north -AND- south side immediately on T1! YEAP, thats correct once the attacker gets onboard, some annoying opponents pop

up in the rear sector of attack. Very hard to decide how many russian troops will stop Finnish reinforcements and how many will proceed

forward towards VC's, great plot!

 

The VC are, exit one tank (of four) and 4 squads on north side. To accomplish this, russian have 12 MMC of elite status (628's and 458's)

against a brittle defending force. The terrain is against the attacker who has to trickle tanks through some gaps in woods and then

race over fairly open ground towards exit.

 

Turn 1, and I entered strongly on west side of boards, Russian HMG were brought by SMC and squads (in armored assault) to hex 38Y5,

which it reached in T1 by advance. I thought it was a good starting point to stop defenders attacking in the rear. Little opposition

were met by this turn and I managed to immediately get Low Ammo in a Aqq shot against concealed unit in 38V1 - disappointing.

 

Turn 2 I raced first tank into woods 38R0 trying to trail-break, BOG of course. Risky business as tanks are needed for Exit VC. Anyway,

many troops and another tank followed into hexes 38R1/38S2. Prior to that a firelane from Hex 38V1 into 38R1 was taken out when my

LOW AMMO tank raced into hex 38V1, cancelling all fire out from HEX. Unfortunately a HIP squad was taken into play on HEX 38X0, Shot,

Hit, Wreck and bail out. I followed up with troops (628's) to form firegroup at 38U2 and squad was eventually taken out.

I managed to take my russian HMG to HEx 38W2 as to separate boards in half by controlling open space beween 38W2 and 19K3. My opponent

had thought it unlikely to an attacker to get into woods on east side of boards, and had nothing to defend with in area. While I had a

traffic jam with troops and bogged AFV's trying desperately to get throgh woods atthe edge of this ASL world ;-)

In the rear I made succes in fending off reinforcements.

 

Turn 3. My rear guard units broke all way and that made my position very vulnerably, my HMG fell into captivity in much troublesame Hex

38X0 now defending against sporadic russian troops :-(

AFV's struggle forward in new woods-hexes with new bogs and trail-breaks, very complicated advance, but hey I'm nearly there. Defending

Swedish units gather in overlay boards 19, awaiting russian breakthrough from woods. One russian AFV moves to Hex 38DD3 on east side to

diverse the attack a little, it was immediatel swarmed by finnish units- support by russian MMC was faint.

 

Turn 4, One of my AFV finally break open into hex 19P3 and gather with troops to form armored assault. Another tank (CE), race along road

and then open into hex 19K1, 19K2 and forward to 19N3 - surviving some PF shots and such. The East flank AFV manage to get out of trouble

and speeding through hexes 38AA2, 19I1 along road including ESB (another risky DR - i'm in a difficult situation) to relative safe hex

19B4 with easy access to exit board in Turn 5, half of VC in reach!

 

Turn 5. I got two tanks and about 5-6 squads in area 19P3, 19N3. Aim is to reach 19P10 (undefended area) and then advance off board.

Trouble is, that requires some CX'ing and move through resid and firelanes and not much can break or pin. Also the russian HMG, now in

Finnish hands reside in Hex 19J1, with perfect FireLane option towards 19P4. I decide that safe Tank in hex 19B4 has to help out, If i'm

going to hex 19P10 with squads some tank has to go along anyway. So this East flank secure AFV returns on road, manage to survive a Schrek

shot at 1 hex distance from 38Y1 to 19I1. And then race into HMG hex 19J1 hindering any fire out from hex - gamey yes but!

My other troops Breaks/Pin/Stops 3-4 hexes further north in armored assault, approx hexes 19P5,O5,P4. Ugghh, this requires some real luck

to be able to exit into P10 and advance off board Turn 6. One tank also probably has to take riders on road 19O7->19I10 and exit to

accomplish VC.

 

As it be, I managed to lock some troops by using VBM freeze and such, but the rider's now travelling on tank towards board edge, pin and

bail out. Scenario Lost, I do not have enough troops to get off board, the rider's trick was my last chance. Axis Victory.

Great game, fun playing and well crafted scenario, with the specific touch of genius design. As the defender gets to manouver troops in

attackers rear area, really unusal playing experience (not only just point of view forward as attacker).

 

I lost this game not to dice, bad tactics, wrong play or else. But I lost it on a strategic level, my desire to avoid PF's and Schreks

led to the trailbreak manouver, that spoiled the attack.

 

Afterwards, we discussed som attacking venues, and agreed that the east side approach should be taken, even if defender gather up troops.

Some tactics to get forward fast is to use Human Wave (possible on T2) against a weak defending force or a risky approach with riders and

swing turrets/bail out to get fast forward early.

 

My own tactics, through woods (and relatively undefended area) with armored assault led to a hault. I'm also uncertain how many trail/BOG

check are necessary to travel from 38R0 to 19P3 in a straight Northern path? 3 or 4? If it requires four Bog check and accompanying MF's

it's nearly impossible.

 

Anyway, highly recommended straight forward scenario (splendid name for scenario btw).

Enligt svar på forum, så behövs det enbart 2 st BogCheck för att ta sig igenom denna väg. Så då är det tänkbart alternativ om man vågar riskera

"immob" på VC-viktiga tanks. Jag törs! :P

Det blev ett trevligt och tajt scenario som ryssen slutligen vann med minsta möjliga marginal i sin sista MPh.

Till en början såg det ut att bli en promenadseger, där ryssen obarmhärtigt plöjde sig fram och rakt in i den östra passagen genom skogen bakom brädgårdarna. Den ryska truppen var relativt intakt även efter intrånget i skogspartiet, men därefter stannade anfallet av lite grann och angriparen splittrades upp. Ett par av vagnarna sköts i brand av Psk-skyttarna, en tredje malfade sitt MA, men användes flitigt för VBM freeze och overrun, medan den fjärde tillsammans med de återstående två squadarna tog sig av brädet för seger i sista turnen (två hade redan slunkit ur nätet). Hård af Segerstad med sina svenskar bröt i ett kritiskt skede, och hann lagom komma tillbaka i position i sista turnen, bara för att bli låsta av den trasiga vagnen.

På det hela taget ett roligt scenario med ett lite udda upplägg i form av finnens roll som både försvarare och förföljare.

Mycket roligt och underhållande scenario. Det kändes som en klar förlust efter ryssens inledande turns. Men svenskfinnarna spottade upp sig och bjöd upp till kamp. Med några mera lyckade PF checks hade scenariot fått en annan utgång och hade Hård af Segerstad levt upp till sitt namn så hade svenskfinnarna fixat det. Som sagt mycket jämnt och spännande väl värt att spela igen.
